First Annual Texas Fruit and Vegetable Day

During the 88th legislative session, our Congress established a celebration of Texas fruits and vegetables to be held on the first Friday of April each year. This year, Nurse Supervisor Amy Whaley, BSN, RN, spearheaded the celebration. Nurse Amy conducted a fun taste test for RISE students to experience some delicious Texas-grown fruits and vegetables.

RISE students were given the opportunity to taste cucumber (with Ranch dressing, of course!), Brussels sprouts, asparagus, yellow squash, blueberries, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, and dragon fruit. Several students ate ALL of the samples. The favorites were watermelon and strawberries. The least favorite was cucumbers. Teachers were given fruit and vegetable coloring sheets and the older students completed fruit and vegetable word searches.
